There are three common units for rhinestones, namely PP (pearl plate), SS (stone size) and MM (millimetre size).

MM (millimeter size)

MM (millimeter) is a commonly used unit of measurement. Many flat back, point back, sew on or other shaped rhinestones are measured in millimeters. For example, resin rhinestones, sew on stones, pearls, these products are all measured in MM

PP (Pearl Plate)

The PP unit is usually used for round rhinestones that are very small in size. PP stands for "Pearl Plate", it was originally used as a method of measuring pearl size using a plate, but now it is used to measure extremely small products such as rhinestones. The pearls are placed on a perforated surface or plate, and the size of the pearls is determined by the hole they pass through. "PP" is usually used for smaller stones. The variance of pearl plate is 1/10 mm.

SS (Stone Size)

"SS" (Stone Size) is the most current method of rhinestone sizing, literally means the size of the stone. This unit is suitable for round rhinestones, mainly glass flat back rhinestones and hotfix rhinestones.

SS (Stone Size) is the latest rhinestone sizing method, but PP is still used. Some gemstones will have both PP and SS sizes marked on the packaging label.

Compared with mm (millimeter), the ss unit is smaller and more accurate in measurement. Therefore, it is also used for smaller rhinestones
